2027 Natural Resources Job Shadow & Scholarship Program

PROGRAM DETAILS

The Green Diamond Job Shadow and Scholarship Program introduces students interested in forestry and natural resources to the work that supports the stewardship and management of a commercial forest. Students will shadow one or more of our professionals and learn about the forest renewal cycle—from harvest through reforestation. They will meet the people behind this work and see firsthand the effort required to make sustainable forestry a reality. The program is designed for students currently pursuing a degree at an accredited college in forestry, natural resources, or a related field. Participants will gain insight into the industry, the day-to-day work, and the wide range of career paths available, including opportunities they may not have previously considered. Qualified candidates from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Please note this is an unpaid, educational job shadow program, however the scholarship portion will pay up to $2,000. 

Criteria to apply

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (associate or bachelor’s) in forestry or related natural resource program at a U.S. institution.
• Be interested in encouraging and promoting inclusion within the profession.
• Preferred fields of study include forestry, fisheries, wildlife biology, botany, geographical information systems (GIS), or other relevant Natural Resource based disciplines. 

Job Shadow Information

• Successful candidates will be selected for a 3-day unpaid job shadow.
• You will have a choice of dates between June 7- 30, 2027
• If you are selected, we’ll work directly with you to schedule 3 days during the week. No job shadows will be scheduled on weekends.
• You must have your own travel plan to and from the Green Diamond location chosen.
• You must sign a release to be authorized on the property.

Scholarship

• Job shadow participants will be asked to submit a secondary application after the job shadow to be considered for the scholarship. This application will include questions and a short essay reflecting on what you learned from the job shadow and how it fits in with your future career goals. If awarded, the scholarship will be up to $2,000.

Location & Housing

• This job shadow opportunity is in several different states where we operate to include California, Georgia, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
• Travel to the location is at the student's expense. 
• Housing will be provided by the company. This will be in the form of a hotel room located close to the office. California and Washington locations have onsite housing available. The onsite company housing has a private room for your stay that is available near our offices.
• A $50 daily stipend will be provided to help offset the cost of meals.

Who you are: 

You may have completed your first year or two of college and are ready to start exploring possible career options or are looking to narrow down your field of study in school. You are an avid learner, inquisitive, ask questions, and enjoy variety in your work. Most of all you enjoy being outdoors and are excited about finding a career in an industry that offers you that opportunity. 

What this opportunity provides: 

During the Natural Resource job shadow you will learn how a working forest is managed; below are some examples of the types of work you will see:

• How a Timber Harvest Plan is engineered and launched.
• Examples of how new technology and equipment processes have helped reduce the impact of harvesting on the forest and increased worker safety.
• How silviculture processes are used to rejuvenate timberlands and keep the forest healthy.
• How GIS and drone technology is used for mapping and inventory work.
• Conservation efforts used to care for wildlife, fish, plants, and soil. 
• The use of carbon projects and conservation easement work.
• How jobs in Natural Resources interact with professional office positions that keep the business running which includes accounting, human resources, public affairs/legal, and information services. 

We also have job shadows open specifically related to our Acquisitions and Business Development (ABD) Department. In those opportunities you would gain exposure to the natural climate solutions work related to working forests, examples include timber acquisitions, carbon projects, conservation easements, and more.

Natural Resource Job Shadows are available at the following locations: 

• Korbel, CA
• Bogart, GA
• Kalispell, MT
• Klamath Falls, OR
• Shelton, WA

When applying for the job shadow, you will select which location and opportunity you are interested in. 

Timing:

The job shadow will occur during the month of June 2027. The application includes the weekly choices. The job shadow will occur during 3 days during the week. No job shadows will be scheduled on weekends.

You will be assigned to one of more of our professionals for the during of your job shadow experience. If you are selected, we will work with you to develop an individual experience taking into account your career interests. An agenda will be sent to you in advance of your trip.

Community Giving Program FAQs:

1. Which community organizations are eligible to apply (e.g., geographic location, 501(c)(3) status, etc.)? Any community organization in and around our operating areas in Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida may apply. They may be charitable [i.e., 501(c)(3) status] and non-charitable (e.g., professional organizations, chambers of commerce, rotaries, fire departments, etc.)
2. How large of a donation may I apply for? Most contributions average $500-$1,000 in value, but applicants may apply for up to $5,000.
3. How long does it take Green Diamond to review and process a donation application? Donation applications require 2-4 weeks for review and 2-4 weeks for award distribution, so please submit your application 6-8 weeks in advance. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
4. How many donation applications can I submit each year to this program? There is no limit, so you may apply multiple times.
5. What should I do if I would like to ask Green Diamond for multiple contributions for the same project, event, fundraiser, etc.? Please submit separate applications for each item. For example, if you would like Green Diamond to submit a $500 sponsorship and a live auction item to an upcoming event, please submit an application for each.
6. How can I communicate with the Green Diamond community giving team if I have questions? You can message the team directly through your Submittable account.

Purpose: This scholarship is intended to recognize and support individuals who plan to enter fields of study that will lead to the continued enrichment of the Natural Resources and related industries. This scholarship is for vocational, undergraduate, or graduate programs, and can be awarded to high school seniors or return students attending a higher education program. 

Eligibility: Awards will be given based on industry involvement, academic merit, participation in extra-curricular activities and area of study. Special consideration will be given to employees, spouses, or children of Green Diamond employees.

Awards Distributed: January 15, 2027

Award Amount: Awards are up to $1,000 depending upon number of applicants, relevance to the industry, and program budget. 

Instructions: To be eligible, all applications and supporting documentation must be received through the scholarship portal on our website by November 30th.  Scholarship recipients will be notified by January 15th. The following is required to be considered: 

• Copy of high school or, if applicable, most recent college transcript(s). An uncertified copy is acceptable. 
• Resume. 
• Letter of recommendation from previous employer, teacher, or community member.
• Completed essay questions on the application within the portal.
