Since 1947, our Mark E. Reed Scholarship has supported many deserving students. The program was established to honor one of our company’s earliest leaders who influenced the education of many young people in Washington State. Through the program, we award scholarships of $3,000 each to students attending high schools and colleges in our operating communities. The funds may be used for tuition, books or living expenses incurred while pursuing education beyond high school.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must attend school on a full-time basis during the academic year of the scholarship.
- Applicants must qualify as an employee, spouse of an employee, child of an employee or resident.
- In Washington, residents of Mason and Grays Harbor counties may apply. In Oregon, residents of Klamath and Lake counties may apply. In California, residents of Humboldt and Del Norte counties may apply.
- There are no restrictions for scholarship recipients as to race, age, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, veteran or marital status or sensory, mental or physical disability.
Factors in considered in the selection process:
While there are some variables considered in the selection process, merit is the principal determinant. Local boards evaluate candidates on:
- Qualities of leadership and citizenship
- Seriousness of purpose
- Scholastic achievement
- Ability and capacity for continuing development
- Breadth of outlook as evidenced by participation in activities other than scholastic activities
Applications are due by February 28th.
Purpose: This scholarship is intended to recognize and support individuals who plan to enter fields of study that will lead to the continued enrichment of the Natural Resources and related industries. This scholarship is for vocational, undergraduate, or graduate programs, and can be awarded to high school seniors or return students attending a higher education program.
Eligibility: Awards will be given based on industry involvement, academic merit, participation in extra-curricular activities and area of study. Special consideration will be given to employees, spouses, or children of Green Diamond employees.
Examples of relevant fields of study: Accounting, Analytics, Aquatics, Automotive Repair, Biology, Botany, Business Administration, Chemistry, Communications, Computer Science, Economics, Electrical Repair, Engineering, Environmental Science & Management, Fisheries Biology, Forestry, GIS, Geology, Government, Heavy Equipment Operations & Repair, Land Surveying, Logging Operations, MBA, Natural Resources, Political Science, Rangeland Resources, Soils, Truck Driving- CDL, Welding, and Wildlife.
Application Window: December 1 – March 31
Awards Distributed: May 1
Award Amount: Awards are up to $1,000 depending upon number of applicants, relevance to the industry, and program budget.
Instructions: To be eligible, all applications and supporting documentation must be received through the scholarship portal on our website March 31. Scholarship recipients will be notified by May 1. The following is required to be considered:
- Copy of high school or, if applicable, most recent college transcript(s). An uncertified copy is acceptable.
- Resume.
- Letter of recommendation from previous employer, teacher, or community member.
- Completed essay questions on the application within the portal.
